Community encouraged to support Racial Harmony Resolution

SAULT STE. MARIE - On March 25, 2013, Sault Ste. Marie City Council endorsed a resolution acknowledging the value of the diverse cultures and people who make up the Sault Ste. Marie population.

Brought forward by the Sault Ste. Marie Local Immigration Partnership (LIP), the Racial Harmony Resolution validates that racial discrimination or intolerance against any person in our community should not be condoned.

As a next step, the LIP is asking all boards, councils, businesses and organizations in the community to show their support of the Racial Harmony Resolution.

“Cultural diversity is our future in Sault Ste. Marie and if we are going to grow as a community, everyone has to be a part of our success,” noted Councillor Paul Christian. “Supporting the Racial Harmony Resolution is a simple task that will make an extraordinary difference in our local businesses, schools, and the community as a whole.”

Starting today, LIP will distribute information packages throughout the City asking for community support of the Racial Harmony Resolution.

As a supporter, organizations will be provided with an Embrace Diversity sign to display publicly to help promote key messages about racial harmony.

Sault Ste. Marie is made up of people from all different backgrounds and ethnicities. Promoting racial harmony and embracing cultural diversity involves engaging the entire community.

“We are a caring community - this resolution is long overdue and it’s going to help us understand each other and learn to embrace the rich diversity within people who make up our great City,” commented Councillor Joe Krmpotich.

If you are interested in supporting the Racial Harmony Resolution in your workplace, please contact the LIP office at 705-759-5752.

Let’s work together to show our support for cultural diversity in Sault Ste. Marie!
