David Orazietti considers running for Provincial Liberal Leadership

Friday, October 19, 2012   by: Darren Taylor

Sault Ste. Marie MPP David Orazietti says he is considering entering the race to succeed Dalton McGuinty as leader of the Provincial Liberals and Premier of Ontario.

“I am giving the run for the leadership serious consideration at this point,” Orazietti told SooToday.com Friday afternoon.

Orazietti’s comment comes in the wake of McGuinty’s surprise announcement earlier this week that he will be stepping down as Liberal leader and Premier as soon as a new leader is chosen.

Orazietti is Premier McGuinty’s Parliamentary Assistant.

Orazietti told us: “Obviously there are many aspects to a run for the leadership to consider... [but[ I am giving it serious consideration. I do think the party has to renew itself and bring forward new policies, certainly for Northern Ontario, and bring Ontarians together.”

“I think there’s a sense that there are divisions in Ontario that need to be mended. There is a perception of a Northern Ontario-Southern Ontario divide, a rural-urban divide,” he continued. “I think that’s something any candidate needs to focus on. The economy is paramount, and jobs in Northern Ontario are something I’m very concerned about.”

Orazietti was first elected as Sault MPP in 2003, re-elected in 2007, and again in last fall’s provincial election, which saw McGuinty’s Liberals returned to power with a minority government.

In the past nine years Orazietti has served, at various times, as Parliamentary Assistant to several Ministers, including the Minister for Education, Minister of Natural Resources, and Minister of Northern Development and Mines before being appointed Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier in November 2011.

Orazietti said: “We’ve made remarkable progress in Sault Ste. Marie over the last nine years, and I’m certainly pleased with the support that I’ve received from my colleagues at Queen’s Park and the Premier.”

“Going forward, we want to continue to see strong progress in our community," he explained. "That’s my top priority, ensuring we’ve got a strong economy locally, to continue to improve our health care services and access to those services, as well as improving our local postsecondary education opportunities at Sault College and Algoma University.”

“Also, the tension that presently exists between the provincial government and school teachers across the province, we need to remedy, and there are a number of approaches that could be brought to bear to improve those circumstances.”

Gerry Lougheed Jr., a Sudbury business figure and longtime Liberal supporter, told Sudbury media earlier this week he felt the Sault MPP would be a good choice to succeed McGuinty, describing Orazietti as a young fresh face for a struggling government.

To that, Orazietti responded with: “Gerry Lougheed is a well-known, well-respected individual in Sudbury and I am very appreciative of his kind remarks and comments.”

K, more people are blasting him instead of the cheap wine Greco is advertising to the wino's of this city (I deliberately chose a non offensive to that mass), anyways, it's based on donations, he wants to run, let him, will he make it, not likely, did he say he'll run for it, not exactly, that's a politician. As for liberals in general, I'll get hate, since ever since Jean Chretien I had hope, what this Country needs is a common man, one that relates to the people, and isn't buying absurd things, even Chretien refused to buy jets just for his luxury, and would fly public air travel.
If his son became Prime Minister and still retained all his fathers morals we would be much better off in regards to reform and equality for this country. With Harper, who I still don't even understand why he was voted in AGAIN, with his overspending any blatant disregard for equality, despite any "morals" his base had, the results should make them form ulcers. NDP I'll atleast acknowledge as a fair alternative, and people can form their own opinions on who or what they choose based on their own personal quarrels with society. Although for people to lash out at D. Orazietti is absurd, maybe people should be focusing on the greater good of the country and think about it as well. We need a strong Liberal base, not only in this town, but in the country, that is my opinion. People refuse to see eachother and focus on similarities and how we share the same morals, we just view how things should be run differently. People are always complaining about how another person is making a mistake instead of how we ourselves are to blame, take the common typer spouting hate on a news piece. This piece is talking about a local man raised here that was interviewed about his aspirations and you people instantly jump down his neck... I wonder how many people waved at Harper when he went through, and he didn't even give one of those lazy Hitler waves and instead chose arrogance. As long as people, and I mean the PEOPLE of Canada, choose to form together themselves and rationale that common goals of their communities we'll always have problems. I do believe that one day we'll gather together, and instead of corrupt organizations making money of the CEO's while disregarding the hole it's creating in our country, we will always fail.
Anyways, I could ramble for hours, but anyways if you read this, if you do run for it goodluck and if not that's fine too.

I have never voted for him & never will because I never trusted the Libs or him since day 1. He reminded me of Tony Martin NDP, who used to use the same propaganda, over & over, to remind everyone how great he was & all he did for the SOO when in reality,it was all a dream & the bubble burst & he was gone, thank goodness..................

Justin....David won't win, but you are right in that he probably ought to run as the only Northern candidate likely to consider the leadership. Superfluous though it might be, at least he can represent the North.

For what it's worth, I've heard former Toronto Mayor David Miller is preparing a team. Wynne, Gerard Kennedy and Miller as the front runners might make for an interesting race.
Justin Tetreault 10/20/2012 4:38:54 AM Report

David Miller is NDP. There's no way he's preparing a team.

For those who think David doesn't have a chance consider Dalton McGuinty had been an MPP for only 6 years when he became leader (Dave has been MPP for 9). He had never been a Cabinet Minister either.

McGuinty finished 5th place on the 1st ballot and ended up winning on the 5th ballot. You never know what could happen on the convention floor. I think David would be more than the token Northerner.

Sunshine, People do have the right to express their opinion and sometimes it can be not very nice. Is that bullying? I'm not sure. It's too bad you are so offended, which is somewhat puzzling, are you related to David? David has the full ability to respond if he wishes. My last point is, when it comes with politics, one must take the good with the bad. I would love his salary and perks but I don't want to expose my family to the public, thus I'm not interested in running for any public post. Part of the job is being exposed to the public and their possible negative comments/reactions. I'm sure David is aware of this when he took on the job. Perhaps you should grow thicker skin, you sound very elitist in my opinion.
Barley 10/20/2012 11:57:08 AM Report

I think David Orazietti would be a great leader for the Liberal party of Ontario. He is, in fact, the quintessential Liberal.

For one thing, his only accomplishments have been in the area of pork-barrel politics. Ask anyone what he’s done and all you ever hear is “he’s brought lots of money to the Sault”. As Liberals tend to be, he’s very good at claiming personal credit for every government penny that enters the riding, whether he had anything to do with it or not. Any way you slice it, though, it’s good old-fashioned pork-barreling, the oldest of Liberal traditions.

But he’s even more qualified by virtue of the fact that no one has a clue what he actually thinks about anything. He answers every question with trite platitudes or carefully memorized talking points, meticulously calculated to mean nothing at all and offend as few people as possible. Another fine Liberal tradition.

And lastly, let’s face it folks, even David O isn’t naïve enough to think he really has a shot at the leadership. Sure, he’ll take a run at it, but all he’s really doing is trying to raise his profile and secure himself a cabinet post. This isn’t an undertaking in public service, it’s an exercise in career advancement. And that, my friends, is pretty much what Liberals are all about these days.
speed7 10/20/2012 12:40:57 PM Report

Everyone has a voice. Just as long as its tactfull. What does david o have to do with mr parella? He's a CEO. He makes alot of money. He is paid to go to city council meeting and lie about the water tainted with free chlorine not having any effects on ones health. Go look up free chlorine and see for yourself what it does, especially with an increase in prostrate cancers in men. The sault is the prostrate capital of Canada probably. My dad, father'n 'law, 3 uncles all had it. That's 5 people in my family. That's a very high percentage. Also a very alarming concern for everyone in this city.
sunshine 10/20/2012 1:53:39 PM Report

Yes BigDaddy, people have a right to voice their opinion constructively and without slander. I wonder why we don't see this kind of name calling in the editorials? It is because our society becomes a whole lot braver when they don't have to sign a name. I would like to see Sootoday eliminate this anonymous forum, as I feel it contributing to our moral demise as a society and our growing problem of on-line bullying. Call me elitist for wanting a society for my children free of this kind of behaviour. No, I am not related to David, nor am I a personal friend. I just know right from wrong!
Nimrod 10/20/2012 2:00:53 PM Report

There can be no more great Liberals! Tony Martin brought very little into this riding whereas David has brought in a lot of projects. I am surprised at how many people are being so vile.

Whether your PC/ Liberal/NDP look at what the person has brought to the city. When you compare David and Tony I must say David did a lot more for SSMarie.

I lean more to the PCs but David has worked well for this city. I am more disappointed that Hudak has resigned. If we hope to win Ontario I doubt we can do it with his leadership. He's no Ralph Klein or Mike Harris.

Good luck David - go for the leadership, you would certainly do a fine job. Even if unsuccessful you will put yourself in a good position with the party. I like the fact that a northerner is running. We have not had a premier from the Sault since William Hearst (PC!)in the early 1900s (our only one)

South of Barrie doesn't care about the north or any candidate from the north.
What did he bring us that was so fantastic?
Still only Mcjob and call centre jobs available, selling off the rights to mine and forest in crown lands and closing and number of provincial parks that brought income for northern communities. Closed the northern railroad, took rights of negotiation and going to the labour board from teachers and others.

Took away community start up and home repair programs for those on disability...oh but gave them a big 1% raise! ( for a single person that's $7!) How big was his raise?

Prorogue parliament while we figure out our new leader, which also suspends the time committees meet .... should be like the rest of us....no work no get paid!

Doesn't answer emails or phone calls or help those with travel grant issues...Tony at least always returned calls and helped individuals out with their problems!
