Fedeli hears ONTC concerns at comittee

QUEEN’S PARK - Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli welcomed a presentation from the Ontario Northland General Chairpersons’ Association today before the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs at the Legislature.

The committee, of which Fedeli is a member, is hearing presentations on Bill 55, the budget implementation bill.

“I want to reiterate that I am opposed to the NDP-backed Liberal fire sale of Ontario Northland as it will not save taxpayers any money,” Fedeli said.

“From the $100 million-plus unfunded pension liability, to the subsidies needed to continue the Polar Bear Express and bus service to smaller communities, to environmental and labour contract liabilities, it’s my belief I’ve proven to the government there is no net benefit to this sale.”

Fedeli also took the opportunity to restate that he plans to vote against Bill 55 when it comes up for Final Reading next Wednesday, just as he opposed the budget motion back in April.

“I did not support the NDP-sponsored Liberal budget that sells off Ontario Northland then, and I will not support it now,” said Fedeli.

“I do, however, support a new deal for Ontario Northland, and remain committed to ensuring maximum employment in North Bay and a level of service that satisfies families and businesses throughout the North.”
