Algoma University librarian wins ALISE award

SAULT STE. MARIE - Dr. Michelle Atkin has won an Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) award for a conference paper she delivered in Dallas earlier this year.

Her paper Examining the Limits of Free Expression through Canadian Case Law:  Reflections on the Canadian Library Association's Code of Ethics and its Supporting Statement on Intellectual Freedom was presented at the annual ALISE conference.

ALISE is the professional association for Library Science education across North America.

"Having the opportunity to present at such a big international conference was an honour in itself; but having the paper selected by a jury of my peers as one of the 'Best Papers', that is certainly a career high point for me," said Dr. Atkin. "As a recent PhD graduate this means a lot to me because it puts my name out there and it opens up the possibilities for future collaborations with other academics in my field."

Over one hundred research programs and papers were presented at this year's conference.

Dr. Atkin's was one of three papers selected by a jury for publication in the annual Best Conference Papers issue of the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science (JELIS).

Dr. Atkin will also be receiving a plaque at next year's meeting in Seattle to mark her achievement.

ALISE (Association for Library and Information Science Education) is a non-profit organization that serves as the intellectual home of university faculty in graduate programs in library and information science in North America.

Its mission is to promote excellence in research, teaching, and service and to provide an understanding of the values and ethos of library and information science.

ALISE serves 500 individual members and more than 60 institutional members, primarily in the United States and Canada.
