Campout at the canal

Parks Canada hosts 'learn to camp' event at the Sault Canal

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON (May 28, 2012)  – The Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site is pleased to announce that the Campout at the Canal event will be taking place for a second year. 

Mark your calendars for June 16 to 17 and get ready to have fun, while learning about the great outdoors.

Whether it has been a while since you last slept under the stars, or, if you have never been camping before, this event is for you!

This year, Parks Canada staff will be working with Joe’s Sports and Surplus to provide a variety of outdoor activities for a well-rounded camping experience. 

Participants will learn tips and tricks, nature basics, and camping skills to help them enjoy their next outdoor adventure.

The day will conclude with a campfire, night hike, and overnight stay at the Sault Canal!

The event is open to adults and children over seven; all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fees are $7.30 per person, and spaces are limited.

Once registered, participants will be provided with an information package including an itinerary, camping checklist, and a list of required gear.

Some equipment is available for new campers.

The Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site is one of 167 national historic sites operated by Parks Canada to protect and present significant examples of our nation’s heritage.

Completed in 1895, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal was the longest lock in the world and the first to be electrically operated.

The construction of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal marked the completion of an all-Canadian navigation system from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Superior.
