SooToday.com received a couple tips from readers about a racoon stuck on top a street light Sunday.

One reader reported seeing the racoon on the light standard at about 1 p.m. on Sunday.

"We called local police, firefighters and the humane society and no one can help this poor scared animal," said the reader (Shelley). "We just went by again (5 p.m.) and the raccoon is now at the very top of the pole. We tried the fire dept a second time. They cannot help due to liabilities."

Another reader reported the racoon was still on top the pole at the corner of Carmen's Way and John Street at 8 p.m.

The shot above, by Katie Riel, was taken at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday and sent to us by James Scott.

We thought our readers would like to know what happened to that racoon so we were delighted when loyal reader Ruth Galinis sent us the following message and the photos in the gallery.

PUC was hard at work Sunday evening rescuing a racoon from a lamppost on the corner of Carmen's Way and John Street this evening.

I am attaching some pictures I took while the rescue was under way.

Passersby stopped and there was quite the Sunday evening gathering and festivity during the rescue operation.

One of the PUC workers was lifted on the boom of the truck and several methods of rescue were attempted.

In the end the poor racoon missed the bucket, fell to the ground and ran across the street into the bushes behind Bainbridge Street.

Only Mother Nature can provide such entertainment and get people together spontaneously like that!
