HSCDSB elementary student named to Minister’s Student Advisory Council

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) is excited to announce that it will have a voice on the Minister’s Student Advisory Council (MSAC) for the 2012-13 school year.

Patricia Diotte, a Grade 7 student at St. Mary’s French Immersion Catholic School, will be part of a group of sixty students from across Ontario to serve on the Minister of Education’s Student Advisory Council.

In fact Diotte already participated in the first meeting of the new council which was held on May 7.

“I applied to be on the student advisory council because I believe that everyone has a voice that deserves to be heard,” said Diotte.

“We are very proud and honoured to have Patricia representing the students of the province. She will do an excellent job representing the voice of the youth of Ontario to the Minister of Education,” said St. Mary’s French Immersion Principal Colleen Hannah.

The Minister’s Student Advisory Council provides ongoing student perspectives, advice, recommendations and consultations on the Ministry of Education’s policies, programs and practices.

It also gives input on activities related to the ministry’s student engagement activities.

The MSAC also provides feedback on student-focused communication strategies and multi-media products.

During their term council members also have numerous opportunities for leadership and skills development, strategic planning and the formation of government policies, practices and programs pertaining to education.

“Patricia’s appointment to this council shows that she is a young person very interested in her own education and that of others. It also proves that Catholic education is producing tomorrow’s leaders today. The Board is honoured to have students like Patricia in our Catholic learning communities,” said HSCDSB Director of Education John Stadnyk.

Patricia will be required to participate in at least one regional student forum during her term as a MSAC member.

She will also participate in virtual meetings between September 2012 and June 2013.
