SAULT STE. MARIE - Representatives of Algoma 1812 are among select guests invited to meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, his wife Laureen and the Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in Toronto, next week.

Kathy Fisher and Carol Caputo, co-chairs of the Algoma 1812 Board of Directors, have been invited by the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, and Mrs. Laureen Harper, to a Military Muster in Commemoration of the War of 1812 on the occasion of the 2012 Royal Tour of Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.

The event will be held on Tuesday, May 22 at the Fort York Armoury in Toronto.

“We are very excited to be representing Algoma and Sault Ste. Marie at this commemorative event,” says Kathy Fisher, co-chair of the Algoma 1812 Board of Directors. “Fort St. Joseph was the site in which men from Sault Ste. Marie, and Algoma district gathered to form the alliance involved in the first military maneuver in the War of 1812 and this is a great opportunity to get word out there about the importance of our role.”

Algoma 1812 is an organization that was created to develop and implement Signature Events pertaining to the War of 1812.

Commemorative activities and events will take place from July 17 and 18 on St. Joseph Island and then, in Sault Ste. Marie from Thursday, July 19 to Saturday, July 21.

Events include a canoe flotilla to recreate the historical voyage, military musters, cultural celebrations, dances and music, pageantry, re-enactors, historical encampments and participation in RotaryFest.

“This is an excellent opportunity to promote Algoma as a tourism destination, in general,” says Carol Caputo, co-chair of the Algoma 1812 Board of Directors. ”We’re the only northern region that has a historical association with the War of 1812 and invited to this event, and this could be a golden opportunity to promote driving tours and packages for this commemoration.”

Algoma 1812 events are in the process of being finalized and regular updates can be found at www.algoma1812.ca.

The Algoma 1812 office (tel: 705 949-1812) is located on the waterfront side of the Roberta Bondar Pavilion (former Locks Tour Office) and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.
