Warriner not returning behind Greyhounds bench

The Soo Greyhounds announced on Thursday that assistant coach Nick Warriner will not return for the 2012-13 season.

The Soo Greyhounds announced on Thursday that assistant coach Nick Warriner will not return for the 2012-13 season.

Greyhounds GM Kyle Dubas said Thursday that the decision was made not to renew Warriner’s contract, which expired at the end of the season.

“I think the world of Nick,” Dubas said. “It’s not something that was easy (to make the decision). With where we are at and doing a full review, I’m not sure that this was absolutely a perfect fit.”

Dubas said that Greyhounds coach Mike Stapleton met with Warriner and gave him the news, but also spoke with Warriner following the decision.

“Mike went and met with him one-on-one and I followed up with a phone call and he said that he had an inkling (that this would happen),” Dubas said. “He was very professional about it and I would have no problem being a reference for him.”

Warriner had been with the team for four seasons.
