Discarded cigarette causes fire, destroys west end home

During the early morning hours of May 1, 2012, Fire Services responded to a 911 call in the 300 block of Sussex Ave.

Upon arrival, Fire Service crews discovered the home fully engulfed in flames with fire extending to a nearby vehicle.

Damage to the home and vehicle was extensive.

A neighbouring garage and RV received minor heat damage.

As a result of the fire, the home has been deemed unsafe by City building officials.

Fire Services investigation concluded the fire was started by a carelessly discarded cigarette.
