Trapper fined $1,000 for trapping without licence

A north shore area trapper has been fined $1,000 for trapping on private property without a trapping licence.

Raymond Ferguson, of Bruce Mines, Ontario, pleaded guilty to unlawfully trapping a furbearing mammal without the authority of a licence, contrary to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.

Court heard that some time between February 1 and February 28, 2011, Ferguson trapped a bobcat in a wolf snare that he had set on private land in Johnson Township.

Ferguson did not have a valid trapping licence for this area so he reported that the animal had been caught on a registered trap line elsewhere, where he was licensed to trap.

Justice of the Peace, Philip Stanghetta heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, in Sault Ste. Marie, on April 5, 2012.

To report a natural resources violation, call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll-free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours.

You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
