Sometime around noon today a Huron Central Railway engine derailed just east of Carmen's Way.

Locomotive fuel spilled into a ditch to the north of the engine and a cleanup is underway.

Traffic was rerouted around the rail crossing for a short time.

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services was called to the scene.

"We're very happy that no one was hurt," Huron Central president Mario Brault told SooToday.com late this afternoon.

He said crews are attending to the spill and they don't expect major environmental damage.

Brault added that the affected area will be cleaned up totally.

A firm that specializes in such work is assisting.

Brault said no cause for the derailment has been identified yet.

Huron Central is conducting an investigation.
