(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – On Sunday April 8th, 2012 at 11:01 pm the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sudbury Detachment conducted a routine traffic stop just south of Sudbury on Highway 69.

The 38 year old female driver who was the lone occupant of a Mazda M3 initially stopped for police but then drove off causing OPP to pursue.

At approximately 11:47 pm the driver of the vehicle struck two OPP cruisers on Highway 69 in the area of OPP West Parry Sound.

The officers at that location were attempting to deploy spike belts to stop the fleeing vehicle.

As a result of the collision the driver was declared dead at the scene. Three OPP officers were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

As a result of this investigation, the OPP notified the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) who has invoked its mandate.

Further inquiries should be directed to SIU Communications at (416) 622-2342.

Highway 69 between Highway 64 and Highway 124 are expected to remain closed for several hours while the investigation continues.
