Potential brothel on radar for Sault

On Friday someone dropped by the City Planning Department to enquire about what would be involved in obtaining a license for a brothel in Sault Ste. Marie, SooToday.com has learned.

As reported earlier by SooToday.com, it will be legal to operate a brothel in Ontario about a year from now.

Municipal Councils will be responsible to license and oversee these bawdy houses.

But, at least one person in Sault Ste. Marie is looking at getting started in the process of obtaining a license for a brothel as soon as possible says an unnamed source in the City.

Or at least advocating for the right to do so.

"This guy wanted to know if City Council would be meeting to discuss this any time soon," said the source. "He wanted to know if he could make a presentation."

The person asking about a brothel license did give a location but our source was hesitant to disclose that specific address.

"It would be somewhere in the 200 block of Cathcart Street," said the source. "But it's a long way off and I wouldn't worry about it, yet."

Recent news that brothels will be legal in Ontario unless the decision of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice is overturned before it comes into effect 12 months from when it was issued has raised a storm of controversy across the province and into the House of Commons.

Federal Justice Minister, Rob Nicholson and Rona Ambrose, minister for the status of women have said they are seriously considering launching an appeal of the decision to legalize brothels.
