LAKE SUPERIOR STATE UNIVERSITY

Winter be gone

A 14-foot effigy goes up in smoke during Lake Superior State University's annual burning of a snowman to welcome spring.

The ceremony, held March 20 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. has been going on since 1971.

Several hundred students, faculty, and staff read poetry, passed out free daffodils, and feasted on three varieties of barbecued brats.

Spring officially arrived in the northern hemisphere Tuesday morning at 1:14 a.m. EDT.
