Earlier this week Sault Youth Association, the City of Sault Ste. Marie Celebrate 100! and Collegiate Heights Retirement Residence were proud to announce their partnership in presenting the Memoirs of a Century project.

This intergenerational project pairs together a senior with a young person in our community.

The youth will interview the seniors, record their histories and compile the stories together into a book that will be published and released in Fall 2012.

"We are excited to see the outcome of all these interviews. Although, we're more excited to see the friendships built from these interviews and meetings between the seniors and the youth," said Steffanie Date executive director of the Sault Youth Association. "We hope for both the senior and youth to identify with each other, be humbled and amazed at their differences and similarities."

This project aims to bridge the generational gap and record our local history through the personal narratives of our most senior community members.

"Before our project begins the Sault Youth Association will prepare youth by hosting introductory workshops and classes," says Amie Woods, community outreach coordinator. "These workshops will teach the youth about proper interview techniques, writing styles, research, and soft skills."

Gathering these memoirs is essential to preserving our city’s heritage.

The release of the book will be in tandem with the City’s Celebrate 100! festivities.
