SAULT STE. MARIE
FIRE SERVICES

**************************
On January 9, 2012 at approximately 12:30 p.m., Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to an ice water rescue in the 200 block of Sunny Side Beach Road.

Fortunately, there were no injuries or casualties found.

Fire Services personnel found an abandoned snowmobile and sled approximately 200 meters from shore which had broke through the ice and was stuck in approximately one metre of water.

The cause of this incident is abnormally mild winter temperatures which produced extremely dangerous ice conditions.

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services reminds residents to stay clear from waterways during mild climate temperatures.

Parents should talk to their children about the dangers of playing around or on under-developed ice and to keep pets on leashes when walking near waterways.
