Armando Plastino named to Algoma University Board

SAULT STE. MARIE - Algoma University has named Armando Plastino to its Board of Governors.

"We're delighted to have Armando Plastino join the Algoma University board," said Board Chair Tim Lavoie. "He will certainly bring a lot of helpful experience to our board table and we're honoured to have such a prominent member of the local community join our team."

Plastino is excited about the opportunity to play a role in the development of the university.

"I am looking forward to joining the Algoma University Board and am eager to learn more about the business of the University," he said.

Plastino graduated from Ryerson University in 1972 with a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology.

He progressed through the ranks at Algoma Steel over his 39-year career with the organization, until finally retiring from his position as the chief executive officer of Essar Steel Algoma Inc. in December 2010.

Among other positions, he had previously served as chief operating officer (from April 2008 until April 2009) and vice-president operations (from March 2001 until April 2008).

Until recently he served on the Board of Directors of Essar Steel Algoma Inc., and is a director and member of the Audit Committee at Rockex Mining Corporation.

University President Dr. Richard Myers indicated that the appointment reflects the University's ongoing commitment to remain relevant to the local community.

"As the University develops its programming and research activities in science, technology and business, it's essential to have good relations with leaders from the private sector," said Myers. "Essar is a major global company. As the former CEO of Essar Steel Algoma, Armando Plastino is uniquely positioned to help us move forward in these critical sectors."
