Observed worldwide on December 1 since 1998, World AIDS Day is the moment of the year where millions of people come together across the globe to remember people who lost their lives to HIV, applaud progress made in responding to the epidemic and recommit to ending the epidemic.

At Algoma Public Health we are promoting CATIE’s (Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange) vision of getting to zero as we acknowledge that HIV is not only a global issue, it is a local one.

It’s time to let everyone know “getting to zero is a must.”

In recognition of World AIDS Day, Algoma Public Health in partnership with HARP - HIV/AIDS Resource Program from the Group Health Centre are promoting Zero AIDS related deaths, Zero new infections, and Zero discrimination.

The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness of HIV in Canada and to encourage people in the district of Algoma to get tested. 

“According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, 25 percent of people living with HIV in Canada do not know that they have it,” said Kristin Bateman, a public health nurse at Algoma Public Health.

On December 1, public health nurses from Algoma Public Health will be onsite at Station Mall to inform our community about access to prevention, treatment, care and support.
