Parent Workshop to Assist Parents

With Revised Health and Physical Education Curriculum    

Sault Ste. Marie: Two local organizations will be co-hosting a special parent workshop regarding the province’s revised Health and Physical Education curriculum.

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) and Algoma Public Health (APH) are presenting ‘The Birds, The Bees & Beyond: Fostering a Sexually Healthy Community’ workshop on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at the Holy Angels Learning Centre at 102 Wellington St. East.

The workshop is open to parents of students in Grades 1 through 8 and is designed to assist parents with having conversations with their children around the topics presented in the revised Health and Physical Education curriculum that the Ministry of Education implemented prior to the start of the 2015-16 school year.  

“We applied jointly for a seed grant from the Ontario Healthy Schools Coalition to do this presentation. Since our application was successful, we have been working in conjunction with ADSB, our coterminous Board and Algoma Public Health to prepare this presentation,” said HSCDSB Religious Education and Family Life Consultant, Sister Pat Carter, csj.

“Human development and sexual health starts with children learning about themselves, their feelings, their bodies and about showing respect for themselves and others,” said Carolyn Kargiannakis, a public health nurse at Algoma Public Health. 

The Birds, The Bees & Beyond: Fostering a Sexually Healthy Community workshop will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, December 3.
