USCGC Mackinaw - The Legend and the Legacy

Mackinaw City author, Mike Fornes, has covered the original icebreaker Mackinaw and its new successor for more than 25 years for various northern Michigan media outlets, including radio, television, and the Cheboygan Daily Tribune.

He has reported on and photographed the many missions of these two great ships, filing first-hand stories of icebreaking, buoy-tending, public relations events, law enforcement, and search and rescue patrols.

Fornes, a frequent guest speaker and tour leader, will be presenting USCGC Mackinaw - The Legend and the Legacy on Thursday, October 29, at 7 p.m. at Bayliss Public Library, an affiliate of Superior District Library.

Mike Fornes estimates that he has given more than 2,000 tours of the Mackinac Bridge and the USCGC Mackinaw.

He is the author of Mackinac Bridge, A 50 Year Chronicle 1957-2007 - USCGC Mackinaw WAGB 83 - An Illustrated History of a Great Lakes Queen and related titles for Arcadia Publishing.

The program is free and open to the public.

The Friends of Bayliss Library will provide refreshments.
