A Boy Named Sue won us over (14 photos)

Their name intrigued us. But it was their rockabilly version of Johnny Cash's Boy Named Sue that won us over. And their onstage antics kept us hooked.

The Boom Chucka Boys traveled all the way from Central Alberta to play an opening set at the Rankin Arena in Sault Ste. Marie for Jason Blaine Saturday night.

Ryan Langlois (vocals, guitar), Joel Rathjen (guitar), Teddy Roy Michaylow (bass) and Ben Shillabeer (drums) have been chipping away at country music stardom for the past six years, releasing two albums in the process - a self-titled release in 2013 and Ramble in February of this year.

"It's been awesome. We just keep climbing the ladder," Langlois told SooToday following The Boom Chucka Boys' set.

"We're always writing and creating, so new stuff will come," he said.

Their efforts have earned the quintet a Canadian Country Music Association nomination for Group/Duo of the Year in 2014, and 2015 Alberta Country Music Award wins for Group of the Year and Rising Star.

Saturday's Sault stop was one of two Northern Ontario shows The Boom Chucka Boys shared with Blaine, something Langlois said was a great experience.
