Cinema Politica SSM to set sail at 46th Parallel Festival

Cinema Politica Sault Ste. Marie (a partnership of Ears and Eyes and its community of like-minded friends) will be making its debut September 20, 6:30 p.m. on board the Norgoma during the 46th Parallel music, art and media festival.

Cinema Politica Sault Ste. Marie (CP SSM) will be showcasing Slingshot Hip Hop which is the first of a series of films that will be screened this year in Sault Ste. Marie as part of our revived local chapter of the Cinema Politica Network.

"Slingshot Hip Hop braids together the stories of young Palestinians living in the West Bank, Gaza and inside Israel as they discover hip hop and employ it as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and poverty. From internal checkpoints and Separation Walls to gender norms and generational differences, this is the story of young people crossing the borders that separate them."

CP SSM, after going dormant for a few years, has recently been given new life through funding received by the Laidlaw Foundation’s pop-up grant program.

Consisting of a group of young local change makers, the CP SSM family hopes to enlighten, educate, and inspire by creating a safe space for people to gather and discuss relevant issues within our community and the world.

Our goal is to use film to inform and empower the movers and shakers of our community with the knowledge to make positive changes in all aspects of the global community.

“Cinema Politica is a unique platform to engage and empower youth in exploring global-local relations through film and critical dialogue.  Film has an extraordinary capacity to capture the human experience and, in turn, inspire and mobilize young change makers in the north. A year’s worth of powerful screenings coupled with a community of support will undoubtedly catalyze amazing youth-led projects in Algoma.” – Shannon Moan, musician, artist, CP SSM Family

CP screenings will be available at various locations across the city including 180 Projects and the Art Gallery of Algoma (among others).

Films we hope to screen will touch on themes of youth activism, environment, food sovereignty, Indigenous issues, mental health, developmental disabilities and the LGBTQ community.

We are all about collaboration!
