BRECKENRIDGE, Barbara 'Bobbie'

Passed away peacefully at ARCH on Thursday, November 13, 2014.  She was 91.  Born as Barbara Ann Faulkner in Myersville, New Jersey, in August, 1923, she graduated from Bernardsville High school in 1941.  She enrolled at Iowa State College, now University, in Ames, Iowa in September.  During freshman week she met a young Forestry student named George.  They were married in 1945 in San Francisco during a layover of the ship on which he was serving in the Pacific Theatre. She is survived by George,  midway through their 70th year together, four children;  Jeff  (Sharon), Thunder Bay,  David (Kathy), Sault Ste. Marie, Joanne (Jon Tost), Rossport, and Shelley Alvin (Tom)  Duluth, MN, four grandchildren, Robb (Kirsten), Chilliwack, BC, Jennifer Zainuddin (Ari), Melbourne, Australia, Ben (Aura), North Vancouver,BC., James Richard (Amanda) and also by her six beloved great grandchildren.   She was predeceased by a fourth grandchild, Megan, Houston, TX. Together with Jeff, their firstborn, the couple came to Canada in 1948 as the result of a job offer from Abitibi Power and Paper Company.  They entered the country as landed immigrants, their ship landing at the dock at the foot of Brock St.  The first five years were spent in the bush, first at Mile 132.3 of the ACR then at Regan, a whistle stop 18 miles west of White River on the CPR.  During that period she raised her family without the amenities of town living meanwhile bearing two children at the hospital in Marathon to which she had to travel by train. In 1953, they returned to the bright lights and amenities of city life beginning a series of moves involving Thunder Bay, the Sault and Iroquois Falls where a long and satisfying life with Abitibi ended in retirement in December of 1984.   From there they returned to the Sault joining old friends and making many wonderful new ones. At Barbara’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service.  Cremation and other arrangements entrusted to the Arthur Funeral Home and Cremation Centre.  Memorial contributions to ARCH, the Red Cross or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
