A 30-year-old faces assault charges stemming from an incident that took place earlier this month.

In a news release issued today, Sault Police say they responded to a call on March 8 about a person being violent in the 200 block of Wellington Street West.

Although the accused left prior to officers’ arrival, investigation revealed the accused had punched one person and pulled the hair of another. Both victims are known to the accused and sustained minor physical injuries, police say.

On March 27, 2024, officers with the Anishinabek Police Service located the accused during an unrelated call for service and arrested her on the strength of a Sault Ste. Marie Police Service warrant. Custody of the accused was turned over to Sault Police.

Tanya Chakasim is charged with two counts of assault.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on May 27.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Chakasim is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
