A suspected fentanyl dealer is facing a long list of charges after allegedly running from police — then trying to pull an officer to the ground.

On Monday afternoon around 3:30 p.m., officers patrolling Gibbs Street spotted a person on a bicycle who had a warrant out for his arrest.

“When officers advised the accused they were being arrested on the strength of a warrant, the accused ran away,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “Officers caught up with the accused who continued to physically resist arrest. While being apprehended, the accused attempted to pull an officer to the ground by grabbing their vest.”

After arresting the suspect, police say they found approximately six grams of suspected fentanyl worth $1,000, a knife and a variety of paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking.

Devon Phillips, 29, is charged with:

  • Possession of Schedule I Substance for Purpose of Trafficking
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order x3
  • Failure to Attend Court After Having Appeared

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Phillips is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
