Mid-week Mugging: OutSpoken Brewing

They showed us a howler (small beer container) and a growler (large beer container), so we gave them two SooToday mugs.

OutSpoken Brewing at 350 Queen Street East is this week’s SooToday Mid-week Mugging.

The microbrewery (locally owned and operated by Vaughn Alexander and Graham Atkinson) was first established in 2011, and offers its own Rabbit’s Foot India Pale Ale, Her Majesty’s Bitter, DEADFALL, Anvil Red Ale and Split Shot Extra Pale Ale for beer drinkers to enjoy.

OutSpoken now supplies an increasing number of Sault restaurants and taverns with its products, with a tap room in the front of the business and a patio on its exterior west side.

“When people are here at the brewery we have either 12 ounce glasses or two dollar samplers in which people can try each of the beers, and for take home products we have howlers and growlers, and our cans, which are a recent addition,” said employee Emily Radford.

“Business has been great.”

“It depends on the weather, but the patio is catching the attention of people who did not notice the brewery was here before, so everyone’s eager to get on there and try it out because patios are a little hard to come by in the Sault,” Radford said.  

For busy patio days, OutSpoken Brewing currently has an arrangement with Shabby Motley, the half craft store, half cafe located next door.

“They serve food, so they’ve created a small menu for us that our customers can order from on the patio, we just run over to Shabby Motley with the order and we bring the food back for them,” Radford  said.

OutSpoken Brewing is open for customers from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with the rest of the week being  production time in the back of the brewery.

“We want to help downtown revitalize, and be here for the tourists in the hotels downtown,” said employee Lucy Fata.

Radford said she and Fata don’t consider working at OutSpoken Brewing to be hard work, because both of them enjoy meeting and speaking to people.

“People come in here because they want to be here. This is fun for them,” Fata said.
