Firefighters are responding to a rail car fire in the city's downtown.

Black smoke could be seen pouring from the site and floating over downtown residences and buildings.

Deputy Fire Chief Peter Johnson said there is believed to be no public danger from the fire, which is located in the Huron Central rail yard near Trelawne Avenue.

According to initial reports, the rail car is empty.

Johnson said the fire is under control.
