A travel documentary filmed in Sault Ste. Marie last summer recently received some major accolades.

Season 8 of Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscope was nominated for two Emmy Awards at the 2016 Creative Arts Emmy Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced last month that the PBS television series was nominated for the 43rd Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy® Awards.

The previous season of travel show, which included episodes on Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma region, was recognized in two categories: Outstanding Cinematography and Outstanding Sound Editing - Live Action.

“We’re thrilled with the nomination,” said Ian McMillan, Executive Director of Tourism Sault Ste. Marie. “It further illustrates how extraordinary our city and region are and once again puts our piece of paradise on an international stage. The Travelscope crew was amazing to work with and produced an exhilarating product capturing the scenic beauty of the area and world-class attractions.”

The Sault Ste. Marie episode features the Agawa Canyon Tour Train, Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, scenic driving along Lake Superior, Voyageur Lodge & Cookhouse, Errington’s Wilderness Island Resort, and fishing in the St. Mary’s River rapids.

The idea for Travelscope to highlight the Sault area stemmed from show host Joseph Rosendo meeting Ian McMillan at the Canadian Media Marketplace in 2014.

“Although I had long understood the scope of the touristic treasures of Ontario and had previously covered the province extensively for my radio and television shows, my interest was revitalized when we met Ian McMillan of Sault Ste. Marie,” said Rosendo. “Ian not only convinced us of the need to shoot an episode of Travelscope in his area, he fueled our fascination for a project energized by the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation to devote a significant share of our show's Emmy-award nominated Season 8 to the province.”

Along with the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation, Travelscope’s Sault Ste. Marie and Ontario-focused season was made possible with support from Tourism Northern Ontario and the Sault’s various private sector tourism partners.
