On Monday, Feb. 27, 2017, shortly before 8 a.m. members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a threatening phone call complaint at the Elliot Lake Secondary School (ELSS) located at 303 Mississauga Avenue.

The male caller indicated that there was an explosive device in the school. The OPP Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU), the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT), the Forensic Identification Services (FIS), the OPP Canine Unit - Explosive Detecting Dog and East Algoma Crime Unit were called in to assist with the investigation and search of the school.

Shortly after 8 p.m., on the same date, members of the Elliot Lake OPP received another threat of an explosive device at ELSS. As a result of further investigation, officers did not locate any explosive device.

These threats are not a joke. Not only did they disturb class, but law enforcement resources were occupied when serious incidents could have been unfolding elsewhere. Bomb threats are serious and will always be taken seriously.

Many people are affected, especially those parents waiting for any bit of information on the safety of their children and the community at large.
