Mayoral, ward candidates set to square off in two nights of debates

SooToday and its partners are hosting six municipal debates as the October 22 municipal election draws near

Candidates vying for the city's mayoral and council seats will have a chance to test each other's platforms as SooToday and its partners hold two full nights of debates.

On Tuesday, Oct. 9 and Thursday, Oct. 11, Algoma University will host the 2018 Sault Ste. Marie Municipal Election Debates in the Shingwauk Auditorium, in partnership with SooToday and Shaw TV Sault Ste. Marie.

SooToday will broadcast each evening’s debate live right here. Also, stay tuned as we will be collecting questions from the public in upcoming online surveys. Shaw TV Sault Ste. Marie will be airing the debates on television, on Channel 10.

Ward councillor debates will be 60 minutes in length, while mayoral candidate debates will be 90 minutes in length.

A full schedule for the debates follows:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 9: 6 p.m. - Ward 1

  • Tuesday, Oct. 9: 7:15 p.m. - Ward 2

  • Tuesday, Oct. 9: 8:30 p.m. - Ward 3

  • Thursday, Oct. 11: 6:00 p.m. - Ward 4

  • Thursday, Oct. 11: 7:15 p.m. - Ward 5

  • Thursday, Oct. 11: 8:30 p.m. - Mayoral Candidates

The debates are open to the public and free of charge. Parking will also be provided.
