Safety zone to be established around Mackinac Bridge on Sunday

SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH.  – The Coast Guard Captain of the Port (COTP), Sault Ste. Marie, established a temporary safety zone around the Mackinac Bridge to protect the safety of life and property during a swim event in the Straits of Mackinac on Aug.11, 2019, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The perimeter of the safety zone will extend 250 yards from both sides of the Mackinac Bridge and will be enforced by the U.S. Coast Guard and federal, tribal, state, and local partners. As stated in 33 CFR 165.T09-0624, all vessels are prohibited from entering the safety zone during the specified time.

To seek permission to enter the zone, hail the Captain of the Port’s representative on an appropriate VHF channel. Those in the safety zone must comply with all lawful orders or directions given to them by the COTP or the COTP’s designated representative.
