Sault, Michigan robbery and kidnapping suspect arrested on Canadian side of border

The U.S. man could be deported as early as next week

The suspect in a late-night robbery and kidnapping in Sault Mich. is currently in custody in Canada and is expected to have a deportation hearing sometime next week, says a detective with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department.

The 23-year-old male suspect was apprehended at a west end residence after he crossed into Canada at the Sault Ste. Marie point of entry, said detective Tom Swanson with the department.

The suspect allegedly robbed the Admiral gas bar in Sault, Mich. and kidnapped a clerk at gunpoint.

The victim was dropped off unharmed prior to suspect crossing the border and his handgun, which Swanson said was a replica, was disposed of.

“He had thrown it out the window and gotten rid of it before he left the Sault, Michigan side to go over to Sault, Ontario,” said Swanson.

Although the suspect was a former employee at the gas bar, the clerk he kidnapped was not known to him prior to this incident, said Swanson.

The suspect turned himself in to Sault Ste. Marie Police Service officers at 9:30 a.m. this morning.

“He had heard we looking for him and had seen police cars near the residence he was at. He contacted us by telephone and said he wanted to turn himself in,” said Swanson.

“Basically, he was walking outside and said he was going to turn himself in to the first police car he found,” he added.

The suspect, who will not be named until arraignment, is currently in custody in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. until the results of an upcoming deportation hearing with the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Depending on the outcome of the hearing, the suspect will be transported to the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. point of entry and arrested by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department.

“Hopefully that will happen early next week,” said Swanson.

A call for comment from CBSA was not immediately returned.
