Decorated combat veteran declared dead after F-16 crashes in Hiawatha National Forest Tuesday night

The 115th Fighter Wing of the Wisconsin Air National Guard has identified the pilot who died in a fighter jet crash in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula earlier this week. 

Capt. Durwood 'Hawk' Jones, a 37-year-old decorated combat veteran from Albuquerque, New Mexico was declared dead Thursday. Jones joined the Air National Guard in 2011, graduating from F-16 basic qualification training in 2015.

The Air National Guard says Jones' F-16 Fighting Falcon crashed in Delta County, Mich. during a training mission Tuesday night. The crash site was located within the boundaries of Hiawatha National Forest. 

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
