Look who won this year's Summer Arts Festival Awards!

The 46th Annual Sault Summer Arts Festival took place Tuesday, Aug. 7 on Portage just half a block east of the Soo Locks. The following awards were handed out by Tom Marshall, 2018 Sault Summer Festival judge:

  • The $300 Best of Show Award went to Anthony Strublic of Marinette, Wisc. A festival regular, Tony is a marine artist who produces finely detailed pencil drawings.  Strublic has won an award in every Sault Summer Arts Festival he has entered.
  • The $150 Best Painting Award went to Sault photorealistic painter Jeanne Tubman, last year’s Best of Show winner. 
  • The $150 Best of Crafts Award was won by the Les Cheneaux Historical Society for a beautiful duck boat kayak. 
  • The $75 Judge’s Choice Award was won by Brigid Garbini of Birch Point and Florida for a display of quilted wall hangings, totes and bags.

The following awards are all $50:

  • Aarre Lahti Design Award: Austin Texas retired engineer Terry Markwardt for his innovative kitchen and barbeque tools
  • Jewelry Award: Danielle Lynch, of Belaire, Mich., for jewelry made of flowers and seed pods
  • Fiber Award: Carol Oslage, of Tomahawk, Wisc., for her splendid array of baskets
  • Graphics Award: Chris Vandermuellen (Mosquito Creek Designs) of McBain, Mich. for a huge assortment of iron work
  • Photography Award: Marine photographer Mike Mishler of Holly, Mich.
  • Pottery Award: Mark Kozma, of N.C. Kozma was last year’s Pottery Award winner
  • Wood Award: Mark Besteman of Rudyard, another frequent winner, for rustic furniture
  • Yvonne Peer Glass Award: Rick Shapero, of Cedarville, an award winner in every Sault Summer Arts Festival he has entered
  • Award for Best Display: Marquette potter, James Taggert, a first time SSAF exhibitor

Honourable Mention Awards went to Paul Mason for wacky, welded yard art; Jeanette White of Bay Mills for a wide variety of Native art and Heather Laurence of the Sault for illustrative and surrealistic paintings

Next year’s Sault Summer Arts Festival will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019. The Sault Summer Arts Festival is produced as a public service by the Sault Area Arts Council, based in Alberta House Arts Center.
