Lakers swept at home against Huskies

Lake State dropped two games against Michigan Tech at Taffy Abel Arena

It was a tough weekend at home for the Lake Superior State Lakers hockey team in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.

Playing on home ice, the Lakers suffered a sweep at the hands of the Michigan Tech Huskies at Taffy Abel Arena.

On Friday night, Trenton Bliss had a pair of goals as the Huskies opened the weekend with a 4-2 win.

With Michigan Tech leading 1-0, Bliss scored a power play goal in the late stages of the opening period to increase the lead before adding what was ultimately the game-winning goal early in the second period.

Eric Gotz had a goal and an assist for Michigan Tech in the win.

Brian Halonen also scored for the Huskies.

Goaltender Matt Jurusik made 23 saves.

Max Humitz and Niko Esposito-Selivanov scored for the Lakers.

Defenceman William Riedell assisted on both Lake State goals.

Laker goaltender Mareks Mitens stopped 26 shots.

On Saturday night, a power play goal by Bliss midway through the second period held up as the game winner as the Huskies capped off the sweep with a 2-1 win.

Brian Halonen had the other Michigan Tech goal in the win.

Jurusik made 34 saves for the Huskies, including 18 in the third period.

Pierre-Luc Veillette had the lone goal for the Lakers in Saturday’s loss.

Mitens made 16 saves.

The weekend results leave the Lakers record at 2-4-0 in WCHA action. Including non-conference action, the Lakers record sits at 4-10-0.

The Lakers return to action on Nov. 22 in the opening game of a weekend road series against Bowling Green.

Next home action for the Lakers is Nov. 29 in the opening game of a weekend series against Bemidji State at Taffy Abel Arena.
