Laker hockey splits on the road

A win on Saturday night helped the Lakers avoid a sweep

The Lake Superior State Lakers hockey team will return home with a Western Collegiate Hockey Association split after weekend action.

The Lakers were on the road for WCHA conference action against the Bowling Green State University Falcons for a pair of games.

On Friday night, Max Johnson and Sam Craggs scored 31 seconds apart early in the opening period to help Bowling Green to a 5-0 win.

Cameron Wright and Evan Dougherty chipped in with power play goals for Bowling Green while Connor Ford scored on a penalty shot to cap off the scoring for Bowling Green.

Falcons goaltender Eric Dop made 18 saves for the shutout.

Mareks Mitens made 27 saves for the Lakers.

On Saturday night, goals in the third period by Alex Ambrosio and Max Humitz broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Lakers a 3-1 win to avoid being swept by the Falcons.

Ambrosio broke the tie just over four minutes into the final frame and Humitz sealed the win with an empty net goal with 13 seconds to go.

Pierre-Luc Veillette had the other Lakers goal in the win.

Mittens made 29 saves.

Ford had the lone goal for the Falcons in Saturday’s game.

Dop made 19 saves.

With the split, the Lakers conference record sits at 3-5-0 through eight games while Bowling Green is 5-3-0.

Next action for the Lakers is a weekend series at home against Bemidji State, which begins on Nov. 29 at taffy Abel Arena.
