Seven people rescued from sinking vessel Sunday

A group of seven boaters are safe after being rescued from a sinking vessel off of Sugar Island, Mich. Sunday.

Chippewa County Sheriff's Office and the United States Coast Guard were called to Lake George off of Sugar Island following a report of a 30-foot wooden boat taking on water.

Prior to arrival on scene, police and coast guard officials were informed that local boaters had managed to rescue all of the occupants from the boat and bring them to safety on Sugar Island.

Chippewa Country police say the boat was found sinking in five feet of water upon arrival, with a portion of the vessel sticking out of the water.

None of the boat's occupants required medical attention as a result of the incident.

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office is reminding boaters to have an adequate supply of life jackets available on board.
