The search continues for a pilot after a Wisconsin Air National Guard F-16 crashed in Michigan's Upper Peninsula Tuesday night.

An F-16 Fighting Falcon assigned to 115th Fighter Wing in Madison, Wisc. crashed at about 8 p.m. Tuesday, the guard confirmed on social media Wednesday morning.

Both the cause of the crash and the status of the pilot are unknown.

The F-16 crashed in Delta County, Mich., which is located along Lake Michigan's north shore and near Hiawatha National Forest.

Initial search efforts for the pilot were carried out by local emergency responders, the U.S. Coast Guard and other government agencies overnight.

“We are a close knit family and when an incident like this occurs, every member in our organization feels it,” said Col. Bart Van Roo, 115th Fighter Wing commander via the fighter wing's social media page Wednesday. “The safety of our pilot along with search and rescue efforts are our top priority, and we will continue to pray for the pilot’s safe return.”

Search and rescue efforts by air, land and water continue Wednesday.
