Do we need heated sidewalks downtown?

Do we need heated sidewalks downtown?

Just when you think you've heard all of the hair-brained schemes that City Council could come up with they suggest heating about 2 km of Queen Street sidewalks. Come on!!
Obviously this city council, or at least some of its members, have their heads in the sand and either have no idea what the taxpayers in the city really want their money to be spent on, or they just don't care. It's probably a pretty safe bet that counselors don't pay any attention to responses to Sootoday articles like this one - just a bunch of busy bodies.
So I think everyone who has commented here, or who has read these responses and felt like commenting, should send a short email to each of their counselors and to the mayor to let them know what you think of these ridiculous ideas. It is the only chance that we have to get some of them to listen.

If I were going to make a comment about the picture, I'd read the caption under the picture first.

Traffic fix proposed for Albert-Andrew intersection

I assume the green shaded areas on the drawing are new concrete curb-like sections and maybe where they are wide enough, unnecessarily expensive paving stones will be installed, not to mention installation of a bunch of new warning signs. These new obstructions may also make snow removal more difficult and expensive, definitely more challenging to the snow removal workers.

Here's an idea. Install two stop signs at the intersection, one for the southbound traffic on Andrew Street and another for the eastbound traffic on Albert Street. Try that for a year and see what effect it has on the number of collisions. I am sure it will drastically reduce them, at the cost of materials and labour for two new stop signs and two big "New Stop" signs on the approach to the intersection.

How much would that cost, $5,0000, $10,000? Instead, the engineer wants to spend $100,000, maybe $200,000 or more to install stuff that may kind of slow down the traffic? That is an unnecessary waste.

Good idea but I am curious what proportion of users would be accessing this web site from a PC versus their phone. And I assume that because this was created by the Innovation Centre that the use of a map was a requirement but how about an option to view a list of links instead of a 2" x 2" map of the entire Algoma District?
