The fact that the YMCA is hosting an information session today from 1-3 o’clock says it all! Obviously the existing management has no regard for the individuals who use their services or they would host an information session early in the evening so people who are working during the day could attend….or maybe have 2 information sessions, one during the day and one this evening.

This reminds me of “the mean girls or guys” from high school days. You know, that group of individuals trying to mask their own incompetence and insecurity by deflecting to another individual who was usually much more intelligent and confident than they were. The ones that gave themselves immunity for their own actions but were quick to focus on what they felt were slights from others.
Shame on you Mr. Shoemaker for allowing this petty issue to be blown out of proportion and not having the integrity to recognize the conflict of having a hired consultant make recommendations on this matter given the background of it.
I have a great deal of respect for you Mr Kinach,as well as the other councillors who were not willing to judge one of their own.

The fact that the city is using the "integrity commissioner" who is a hired consultant for this issue is clearly a conflict of interest. Naturally an individual who has a vested interest in the City of Sault Ste. Marie's use of consultants cannot have an unbiased approach when reviewing the appropriateness of an individuals comments around challenging the use of consultants. For that alone her report and recommendations should be abolished.
Mr. Kinach should be apologized to by the Mayor and Council and everyone should move forward and deal with the many real issues facing our city.

This should definitely be a sponsored event and nothing more, zero cost to the taxpayers in Sault Ste Marie, added to that, maybe have a small admission charge or donation option for the individuals who might be interested in attending this event with the money going to Women in Crisis or ARCH or any of the other legitimate charities that are struggling during these hard times.
If our city leaders feel strongly about throwing our tax dollars around frivolously, I’d much rather see 16 thousand dollars spread amongst the charity organizations that provide some good to our community than a 60 second event that will likely only draw a small number of attendees.

I may not be understanding the big picture here but what’s happening with the hundreds of thousands of dollars being generated by all of the new homes that have been built over the last few years? Vacant land in the rural areas of the city have been bought up and hundreds of large highly taxed homes have been built. These rural residential homes create little impact on the city’s budget other than refuse pick up. They don’t burden the city water or sewers and are all being built on existing roads that were already serviced for snow removal and hydro. There has to be a large influx of dollars into the City’s purse from these and all of the other construction that’s been going on…

City moves to crack down hard on unlicensed short-term rentals

City moves to crack down hard on unlicensed short-term rentals

In my simplistic view of this article the intent is to spend at least $160,000.00 plus the cost of benefits to hire 2 additional Building Inspectors to recover an guesstimated $47,000.00 in taxes and fees from these "rogue" short term rentals! Also, increasing the cost and making the requirements to legitimize these rentals reach the point that people will likely give up on renting or look for other discrete options to advertise their properties. Regardless of what happens our city will never recover the overall cost of hiring additional staff that will just end up just being another burden to us as taxpayers.

Many of individuals who take advantage of these short term rentals are just looking for reasonable options to visit our community and see what it has to offer, supporting our local shops, attractions and restaurants. Additionally our city "thinkers" will be creating a potential financial impact for all of these tax paying vendors who are in many cases struggling to exist.
