U.S. Customs notified after American citizen charged with mischief on St. Joseph Island

OPP claims the man destroyed property, damaged a vehicle after becoming intoxicated

A 55-year-old U.S. citizen has been charged following an incident on Camp D'Ours Island near Hilton Beach yesterday.

OPP has notified U.S.A. Customs Enforcement and Canada Border Services Agency of the arrest.

Full text of a news release issued by the Ontario Provincial Police follows:

HILTON BEACH - On July 5, 2020 shortly after 9:30 a.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to disturbance at a residence on Camp D'Ours Island in the St. Joseph Township.

Investigation determined the owner of the residence was in the process of selling the property and was hosting a small group of friends at the camp. [It is alleged that] a friend became intoxicated and [began] destroying property and throwing items out windows and damaging a parked vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, Kenneth Schuler, age 55 of no fixed address, was charged with:

  • Mischief under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the Criminal Code

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail Court in Blind River on July 6, 2020. The accused was remanded into custody.

OPP advised U.S.A. Customs Enforcement and Canada Border Services Agency as the accused is an American citizen.
