Two charged after police seize drugs near Blind River

Two individuals from Barrie face numerous charges after Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a dispute in Blind River early Sunday morning.

A news release issued today by the OPP states that officer located suspected cocaine, fentanyl and nabilone during a vehicle search.

Full text of the OPP news rleease follows:

BLIND RIVER - On July 4, 2021 shortly after 12:03 a.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a family dispute on Robb Road in the Town of Blind River. The complainant reported an assault between two siblings.

At approximately 12:33 a.m., officers observed a van that had failed to stop at the intersection of Eli Street and Ella Drive in the community of Mississauga First Nation. A subsequent traffic stop was conducted and the accused was located in the passenger seat. An arrest was made police located suspected cocaine, fentanyl and nabilone inside the van.

As a result, Nathaniel Bates, 25 years of age from Barrie, was charged with:
    •    Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court (two counts), contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
    •    Assault, contrary to section 266 of the CC
    •    Possession of schedule I substance - opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
    •    Possession of a schedule I substance - cocaine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA
    •    Possession of a schedule II substance - other drugs, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA
    •    Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act

The accused appeared before the Ontario court of Justice Video Bail on and was remanded into custody.

The driver of the van, Cassandra Kirby, 32 years of age from Barrie, was charged with:
    •    Possession of schedule I substance - opioid (other than heroin) contrary to section to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
    •    Possession of a schedule I substance - cocaine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA
    •    Possession of a schedule II substance - other drugs, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA
    •    Permit person to drive motor vehicle without a licence, contrary to section 32(10) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
    •    Disobey stop sign - fail to stop, contrary to section 136(1)(a) of the HTA

The accused is schedule to appear before the Ontario court of Justice in Blind River on Sept. 2, 2021.
