Two charged after OPP seize drugs, weapons near Chapleau (4 photos)

The Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged two Quebec residents following a RIDE check near Chapleau last week.

A news release issued by OPP states that officers seized $10,000 in Canadian currency; suspected cocaine, methamphetamine and cannabis; and weapons during a search of the vehicle.

Full text of the OPP news release follows:

CHAPLEAU - On Dec. 3, 2020 at approximately 11:35 a.m., members of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) checkpoint on Highway 667 in Nimitz Township. While speaking with a motorist, officers observed unmarked cigarettes in plain view.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of approximately $10,000 in Canadian currency, quantities of suspected cocaine, methamphetamine and cannabis. In addition, officers located edged weapons and bear spray.

As a result of the investigation, Jean-Daniel Lambert-Gosselin, 31 years of age, from Weedon, Que., was arrested and charged with the following:
    •    Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
    •    Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA, and
    •    Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC).

Mario Larose-Turcotte, 32 years of age, from Quebec City, was arrested and charged with the following:
    •    Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA,
    •    Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA, and
    •    Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC.

Both accused parties were released from custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Feb. 8, 2021 in Chapleau.
