Two charged after barn fire

MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES - On Feb. 18, 2018, shortly after 6 p.m. members from the Ontario Provincial Police East Algoma Thessalon Detachment responded to a barn fire at an unoccupied residence on Highway 17 in the Municipality of Huron Shores where two individuals were seen leaving the area and walking eastbound on Highway 17.

A few minutes' later police located a male and female walking eastbound on Highway 17. While speaking to the pair police detected a strong odour of alcohol emanating from the breath of both individuals.  

Investigation determined both individuals were at the barn and had consumed alcohol in the barn. They also forced their way into the unoccupied residence on the same property. 

The barn and its contents were completely destroyed. In the barn was a quantity of hay as well as a horse trailer. Initial estimates of the barn and contents by Huron Shores Fire Chief put the damage at approximately $150,000. No injuries were sustained.

As a result of the investigation, Blade Trudeau, 22 years of age from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario was charged with:

  • Arson-Damage Property (X2), contrary to section 434 of the Criminal Code (CC):
  • Break, Enter a Place -Commit Indictable Offence (X2) contrary to section 348 of the CC;
  • Mischief Over $5,000, contrary to section 430(3) of the CC; and with
  • Disobey Order of Court (X3), contrary to section 127 of the CC.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) court in Blind River on Feb. 19, 2018 and was remanded into custody.

Miigwan Agawa, 18 years of age from Batchewana First Nation, Ontario was charged with: 

  • Arson-Damage Property (X2) contrary to section 434 of the CC;
  • Break, Enter a Place - Commit Indictable Offence, contrary to section 348(1)(b) of the CC; and with
  • Mischief Over $5,000, contrary to section 430(3) of the CC.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice WASH court in Blind River on Feb. 19, 2018.
