Traffic stop near Havilland results in impaired driving charges

An Elliot Lake resident was charged with impaired driving following a traffic stop that occurred Tuesday on Highway 17 near Sault Ste. Marie.

Full text of a news release issued by the Sault Ste. Marie OPP follows:

On Nov. 15, 2022, the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting traffic related duties on Highway 17 in Havilland Township.

A vehicle was observed travelling at a very high rate of speed in a posted 90 km/h zone.

Police stopped the vehicle, spoke to the driver, and determined alcohol had been consumed. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the Sault Ste. Marie OPP detachment for further testing.

Drew Hulan, 23 years of age of Elliot Lake, Ont., was charged with:
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to Section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
    •    Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt - excessive speed, contrary to Section 72(1) of the Highway Traffic Act
    •    Drive motor vehicle with open container of liquor, contrary to section 42(1)(a) of the Liquor Licence Act

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on Dec. 5, 2022. The accused was issued a 90-day administrative drivers licence suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
