Traffic stop leads to impaired driving charges in Richards Landing

Police have charged a Little Rapids driver with impaired following a traffic stop that occurred in Richards Landing last night.

A news release issued today by the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) alleges that the 25-year-old accused refused to provide breath sample to police.

Full text of the OPP news release follows:

ST. JOSEPH TOWNSHIP - On March 9, 2021 shortly after 10 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol duties on C Line Road in Richards Landing.

Shortly after 10 p.m., police initiated a traffic stop on C Line Road of a possible impaired driver. The driver refused to provide breath sample and was arrested.

As a result of the investigation, Thomas Dumont, 25 years of age from Little Rapids, was charged with:
    •    Failure or refusal to comply with demand, contrary to section 320.15(1) of the Criminal Code (CC);
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the CC;
    •    Resist peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC;
    •    Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, contrary to section 320.18(1)(a) of the CC; and with
    •    Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on April 1, 2021.

The vehicle was impounded for 45 days.
