Traffic stop in Bruce Mines leads to drug trafficking charges

Drugs were seized in a traffic stop in Bruce Mines this week.

Two people were arrested following the stop and are facing drug trafficking charges as a result.

Following is a full release from the Ontario Provincial Police:

On July 1, 2020, shortly after 7 p.m., members from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), East Algoma Crime Unit and Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB) initiated a traffic stop on Highway 17 in the Town of Bruce Mines. Two occupants of the vehicle were arrested.  

Police located and seized over 60 grams of suspected cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamines tablets, a wallet containing over $70 in Canadian currency, a cell phone and drug paraphernalia (no monetary value for the drugs available at the time of this media release).  

As a result of the investigation, Nathaniel Bates, age 24 of Blind River, was charged with:  

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking-Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA);  
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking-Other Drugs, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA; and with 
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code. 

Richard Vanevery, age 29, of Iron Bridge, was charged with:   

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking-Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.   

Both accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Sept. 17, 2020.
