Traffic stop in Blind River leads to impaired charges for local driver

BLIND RIVER - On April 20, 2019, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general patrol on Causley Street in the Town of Blind River.

Shortly after 1 a.m., police observed a motor vehicle with an equipment violation. Police stopped the motor vehicle, spoke with the driver and determined that he had consumed alcohol.

As a result of the investigation, Scott Utter, a 52-year-old male from Batchewana First Nation, Ont., was charged with the following:

  • operation while impaired - alcohol contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC); and  
  • operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC.

The accused was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River, Ont. on May 30, 2019.

The OPP reminds motorists that there is no safe amount of drug or alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver that is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
