MUNICIPALITY OF HURON SHORES - On Sept. 8, 2017 shortly before 4:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint of a vehicle that was all over the road on Highway 17 east of the Town of Thessalon.

Police located the eastbound vehicle on Highway 17 near the Town of Iron Bridge and initiated a traffic stop. When speaking to the driver of the vehicle, the officer determined the driver had been consuming alcohol. As the male was being arrested, officers observed marijuana paraphernalia and located a small amount of cannabis marijuana resin on the front passenger seat.

As a result of the investigation, Kevin Hammond, 53 years of age from Sault Ste Marie, Ont., was charged with:

  • Driving while ability impaired - motor vehicle (alcohol), contrary to section 253(1)(a) Criminal Code (CC);
  • Driving with more Than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the CC;
  • Possession of a scheduled II substance - cannabis marijuana - under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA); and with
  • Possession of a schedule II substance - cannabis resin - over 1 gram, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on Oct. 5, 2017.
